RSW: Update 6

RSWgoldpolaroid1.  How I did on last week’s goals.

Um. Terrible. I wrote 2,041 words (out of a goal of 4,680), for a total word count of only 47,726.

2.  My goal(s) for this week.

Here’s the thing. Next Monday’s check-in is my birthday, and I realllllly wanted to have my current WIP draft finished by then. It’s on my Ten Before Thirty list. In order to finish, I’d guestimate I need around 12,000 words. In one week. Because I did my math wrong when goal-setting and included next week, even though I will actually be thirty on the 28th.

So, my goal is to finish the draft of my WIP.

Other things going on this week? Babysitting twins every day, play date with a friend I haven’t seen since middle school, and I still need to fit ziplining in at some point so I can finish off my before thirty list… wish me luck. I am going to need it.

3.  A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised.

Anne twists a thin strand of hair. “Emma, come on. I’m sorry I spied on you, but Mom wanted to know—”

I turn and face her. “Whether I’m as lame as she thinks? Whether I will ever amount to anything?”

Her mouth twitches. Hurt. “We wanted to know if you were OK.”

 4.  The biggest challenge I faced this week (ex. finding time to write).

This week has been hectic. I babysat my twin nieces, organized and executed a somewhat last minute surprise birthday party for my husband, started reading Pointe by Brandy Colbert (which I am really enjoying!) and finished the quilt I’m making for my son. Productive for sure, just not productive on the writing front.

5.  Something I love about my WiP.

I love that it’s almost done! I came up with a shiny new idea this week amidst all the hubbub, and I can’t get it out of my head.

So, how did YOU do this week, writing or otherwise?

I’m so excited that you’re so close to the end! You can TOTALLY write 12K in a week. When you break it down to 2K a day for 6 days, that’s nothing. (Ha! Says the girl who doesn’t have to do it!) I’m rooting you on, Crystal! Have a wonderful (productive!) week!

  2. Melanie says:

You can do it! I’ve done 12000 in a week before. Now granted, they weren’t the best words I ever wrote, and it was in November, not in July, but they became something beautiful in the end. You can definitely do it. I’ve got my fingers crossed for you!

What great goals! And down to the wire. I had to laugh about the ziplining. I hope you manage to do all you can before next Monday, but even if you don’t, you have a mostly written draft, and just think how many people never get that far.

    • Crystal says:

Thanks, you’re right, it’s nearly there which is exciting in itself… although I have two other novels I’ve finished and drawered, so finishing it might mean nothing at all!

SNIs can be ridiculously distracting but terribly fun to think about, right? And sorry it wasn’t a productive week on the writing front, but yay for all the other things! Good luck this week in completing all the things and happy early birthday!

    • Crystal says:

Thanks! I am starting to have trouble getting in the headspace for my current WIP with the SNI staring me down… I need to get it out of my mind! 🙂

    • Crystal says:

I’m nervous about the ziplining, and it might not happen until after my birthday, but I’m excited! The course has all kinds of challenges up in the air, and that is what is scaring me :-/

You’re so close to finishing! It might seem like it’s not possible to get those 12,000 words done, but you might surprise yourself! That’s a pretty great deadline, so that might just be the incentive you need. Broken down into about 2000 words a day doesn’t seem like *too* much, but then like Katy said, I’m not the one who has to do it. Lots of luck and crossed fingers for you this week! 😀

    • Crystal says:

2,000 a day is crazy hard for me! I’m not the fastest writer, really, and I also don’t have a ton of writing time right now, but I will give it my best shot! 🙂

I really loved Pointe, a very honest and well written book. You can reach your goal of finishing this WIP before your birthday. I’m sure it’ll be difficult, but don’t give up!

    • Crystal says:

Thanks for the encouragement! I am really enjoying POINTE so far, but I think I have to put it aside to make this goal… or try to make the goal anyway, haha…

  7. Erin Funk says:

That’s a tall order to write 12k in one week, but I’m sure if you’re determined you can do it! I’m cheering you on and hoping that next Monday you’ll be celebrating a finished draft as well as your birthday! 🙂

    • Crystal says:

Last night I worked for several hours and thought I got sooo much written. Turns out, I only wrote less than a thousand words, haha… I don’t think I’m gonna make it!

  8. Kitty Murry says:

You are so close! You can do 12k in a week, I just know it! Uh, I’m not so sure about the ziplining, though. 🙂 (But that’s just me projecting my wimpiness onto you! Don’t let that stop you.) Put that SNI on the backburner and tell it you’ll get to it next week. Good luck with your goals, Crystal!

  9. Melanie Stanford says:

Good luck with finishing your WIP. I think those thirty before thirty lists are great- but don’t let it stress you out! (I guess it’s easy for me to say that since I never made one!)

  10. Ghenet Myrthil says:

I’ll be cheering you on as you complete your draft this week – you can do it!!

Also, yay for 30! My 30th is on Thursday and while I won’t finish everything on my 30 before 30 list, I’m excited about entering this new decade. 🙂

    • Crystal says:

Makes me feel better to know someone else might not finish everything on their list! I really think it might be the only one I don’t complete, but I, too, am excited about the new decade! Bring on 30 🙂

  11. Jessica Leake says:

I SO hope you’ll finish!! I agree with everyone else: you can definitely right 12k in a week! You might be surprised to find that writing the last few chapters will come a lot faster than in the beginning!

    • Crystal says:

Everyone is in agreement but me! Haha… I’m hoping the final chapters come together quicker, but I’m a little stuck on the part I’m currently writing so it’s not looking good. I’m so pessimistic, haha…

    • Crystal says:

This’ll be my third novel, so it won’t be too awful if I don’t finish it… and it’s looking like I won’t, haha… but yes, I love setting goals! It’s so fun to cross things off a list as you complete them!

  12. Karyne says:

That is a huge goal! I think it would be great if you could do it, but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t. Enjoy your birthday! Finishing it a week or two later is still a huge accomplishment! Good luck!
