RSW: First Update!

RSWgoldpolaroidFirst Ready. Set. Write! update. Exciting stuff! If you’re like, WTF is RSW, see here and here. On to the update!

1.  How I did on last week’s goals.

My goal was to write 4,680 words, and I surpassed it! I wrote 4,919 words, for a total word count of 27,480. Yay!

2.  My goal(s) for this week.

My goal this week is another 4,680 words, which would put my WIP word count at 32,160.

3.  A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised.

She holds out her arms toward me, puts me on display for him. “She thinks the pantsuit is too masculine. I think it’s sassy. Tell her she’s wrong.”

4.  The biggest challenge I faced this week (ex. finding time to write).

Finding time to write was definitely difficult this week, and will probably remain difficult throughout RSW. It was especially difficult because Orange is the New Black Season Two.

5.  Something I love about my WiP.

I love the way Emma thinks in rom-com scenarios almost exclusively. It’s great fun to write!

So, how did you do this week, writing or otherwise?

How do you come up with 4680?! I like that TV is your obstacle. 😉 I guess that’s one benefit to me not having access to TV shows. Not sure it’s a fair trade, though…

    • Crystal says:

Haha, my husband and I just love that show so it’s hard not to binge watch it now that it’s on Netflix!

And I took the amount of words I *think* I have left in my WIP and divided it by weeks left to my finished first draft goal! I love to overcomplicate things 😉

Haha! I realized I never saw the answer to my question when I was reading through your update this week and I saw the same random number. It totally makes sense though! =)

“I love the way Emma thinks in rom-com scenarios almost exclusively.” <– This alone makes me want to read the whole story. Also, the line you shared rocks. Best of luck with your goal this week, Crystal!

Big congrats on meeting and surpassing your goal! I am purposefully staying away from OITNB right now. In fact, I’m staying away from any new television. I just finished Veronica Mars and am making myself focus on writing. It’s so hard! I appreciate your struggle!

Good luck with 4680 words this week!

  4. Mandie Baxter says:

Oh, interesting line. Congrats on meeting your goals and good luck this week! Also ACK! OITNB…I’ve only watched 2 episodes. I may have to watch without my husband.

    • Crystal says:

We are four episodes in right now. Sooooo good! I was worried I’d be disappointed after the awesome first season, but nope! They’re really knocking it out of the park.

I love what you said about your MC! Thinking in rom-com scenarios sounds awesome! Good job meeting–and surpassing!–your goals this past week. Here’s to another productive week ahead! 😀

  6. Alison Miller says:

You did great! Way to meet your goal and surpass it! Also, love the line from your story!

I hope you have another great week! My goal is around the same as yours so GO US!

  7. Erin Funk says:

Ooo, I love a good rom-com, so your mc sounds awesome! Good luck meeting your 4680k word count, and I hope it’s a bit easier to find writing time over the coming week! 🙂

I hear you about getting distracted by TV shows. I’ve been beige watching the first three season’s of Teen Wolf for three days. oops. Thanks for sharing

    • Crystal says:

Yes! Teen Wolf! My husband loves that show so we just finished the third season, and DANG. Stiles did some Acting (definitely with a capital A). I was thoroughly impressed.

Congrats on surpassing your goal this week! I feel you about finding time to write, and also about being tempted by TV! I love binge-watching things, so if I get started on something, I must keep going. The temptation is too much!

Um, and I read your poem linked in your profile to wicked alice, and I don’t know what you mean your poetry skills are not up to scratch! I don’t think the verse novel is out of your reach! This is my first attempt too (and I actually don’t think it’ll be a novel – more like a just a verse story?), but yeah, I definitely don’t feel qualified to do it. I just like poetry? Haha. 🙂

Good luck with your goals this week!

    • Crystal says:

Aw, thanks for checking out my poem! I do write poetry on the side but I think the sheer amount of rejections I get from literary magazines has blown my poetry confidence completely. Glad to know someone enjoyed it, though!

And I feel strongly that having access to all episodes of a series is a blessing and a curse. I don’t have enough willpower to stay away, either! The worst one I ever did was Gilmore Girls–seven seasons in like, two months? Or something ridiculous. Of course that was back when I was working a really slack job from home so I could watch while I worked. Those were the days…

Congrats on surpassing your word count goal this week!

Finding time to write is tough for me too, and OITNB season 2 didn’t help. But I finished watching this weekend and it was SO good!

    Have a good week. 🙂

    • Crystal says:

Thanks! We are slowly working our way through… my husband and I only have a couple post-baby-bedtime hours to work on our own projects and OITNB is taking them over, haha…

    • Crystal says:

Thanks! I often feel like the first 25k flows better than the last, haha… that’s when you have to start connecting threads and making sure nothing overlaps or gets disjointed. Getting the middle right is always so hard for me!
