Should’ve Read the Book First or When Book Covers Go Bad

161426Meg Rosoff’s HOW I LIVE NOW has been recommended a billion times over by various Internet people, but I just couldn’t pick it up. The cover makes it look BORING. It’s so plain. What am I supposed to take away from that cover? It doesn’t really hint at the conflict and awesomeness that is presumably inside. I say presumably because I still haven’t read it.

I saw the movie starring Saoirse Ronan. I know. I, too, prefer to read the book before seeing movies with literary sources. But it was a movie night and the trailer looked interesting and my husband agreed that it looked good, so we rented it. I loved the story. I instantly regretted not picking it up previously.

The conflict? Now, when I read it, my imagination will be limited to those actors and how they portrayed the characters. I’ll know all the big stuff that’s around the corner. Basically, I spoiled myself on a book that I really would’ve liked. Ugh. Good job, me.

I’ll still read it eventually, but I’ll be kicking myself the whole way through I’m sure.

Have you ever regretted watching a movie before reading the book? Been turned off to a highly recommended book just because of its cover?

I’m not a fan of movie covers, either. But man! The cover you linked to is a lot more intriguing. I might’ve read it if that was the cover I saw everywhere… Oh well. Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve…

I listened to this book on audio and was torn. I loved the story and mood and emotion, but the reader’s voice was way too chipper for such a morose story. Plus, the whole cousins-in-love storyline made me uncomfortable. That said, I watched the movie a few months ago and liked it so much. More than the book. Actually, I think the movie made me like the book MORE, if that makes sense. Or maybe I’m just rambling. 😉 In either case, you should give the book a go. I’d love to know what you think!
