One Piece at a Time

This week I got quite a bit of writing done! My old self would be unimpressed, but my new mommy self is ridic proud to have written 4,324 brand new shiny words on my current WIP. Hold for applause.

Outside the Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame, January 2013.

I had been struggling to start most days, but after seeingΒ this blog post by Kris Atkins which noted her 100 words/day goal, I felt a renewed zeal. 100 words is nothing! Super easy! I can totally fit 100 words in during nap time and after baby bedtime. It helped that my work was up for critique with my writing group, too, so I had extra incentive. And after I got 100 words, on some days, I kept going. Going and going and going. My story is slowly coming together and it feels very satisfying. It reminds me, weirdly, of that Johnny Cash song, “One Piece at a Time”–

The first day I got me a fuel pump
And the next day I got me an engine and a trunk
Then I got me a transmission and all of the chrome
The little things I could get in my big lunchbox
Like nuts, an’ bolts, and all four shocks
But the big stuff we snuck out in my buddy’s mobile home

Even with two awful days consumed by a migraine, I far exceeded 700 words for the week.

Yay for writing!

Have you set any writing goals for yourself this week? Did you meet them?

Yay for “One Piece at a Time” writing! I’m slowly working on an outline for a new project. And I’m trying to embrace the slow part–and not rush into figuring out where the story needs to go (even though I’m looking forward to drafting it!).

I admire your self-control! The only way I have learned not to rush things is by having a tiny human that never lets me get anything done–I no longer CAN rush things even if I want. I need a new method for learning life lessons because this method is thoroughly exhausting, lol.

Thanks! If I can keep momentum that’d be awesome! But I’m just going to count on getting 700 words a week for now and be happy if I exceed it πŸ™‚

First of all, I am pretty much the biggest Johnny Cash fan ever and “One Piece at a Time” is one of my favorites of his. It ran through my head as soon as I read the title of your post, and I was so excited to see you reference it later. That song is so weird and obscure!

Anyway. πŸ™‚ Congrats on hitting your writing stride. I try to set daily word count goals as well. Definitely helps me stay on track. Best of luck keeping your momentum, Crystal!

Glad to hear you got in some writing time. I wrote most of my book during baby naps, which seems kind of incredible to me now. It can work, as long as you don’t fall asleep, too. Good luck!
